Ok so you might have played the Aliens vs. Predator multiplayer demo and either thought; "Damn this is badass!" or "WTF is this?" Well AvP may have the same priniples as any other multiplayer title: kill or be killed, but it has a more subtle style of gameplay that players will need to adopt if they want to be top in the intergalactic-race war.
Rather than going all Quake or Unreal - running around using as much ammo as possible on your enemies until everything stops moving - you are going to need to learn how to use close combat techniques. AvP might not give you a true Jackie Chan fist-fight experience, but the melee combat is a tad more advanced than most FPS titles out there.
Especially with the Alien (who doesn't have any proper long range attacks) you will need to understand the art of blocking and how to use your heavy and light attacks effectively. While the Predator is a bad mofo, the best way to kill without being spotted (and killed yourself) is to use some stealthy tactics. And for the Human, your gun isn't very effective when you have an eight foot beast right in your face - you will need to learn how to block and counter-attack effectively.
The above video helps to give you these pointers, focusing on some of the main melee combat tips for each race. So if you are struggling when your opponents are all in your face, then hit the play button. You might suddenly realise how different and fun the game is.
On a different AvP note. We mentioned yesterday how PC and PS3 demo players were having problems trying to connect to games. At the time the PC version had received a patch, which is meant to have fixed the problems, but the PS3 version wasn't going to get any update.
Well on the SoE blog, they made a comment that while the PS3 version doesn't yet have a patch, one is being made:
"Just as an FYI for our PS3 players; since our earlier update regarding successful patching of the PC demo of AvP, Rebellion have been working with Sony and us on investigating reports of a similar issue from some PS3 owners. Tests so far have shown a significant improvement, but we’re not yet finished with the fixes. The team are working to make it even better for players."
So there you are PS3 fans. You should hopefully have any issues solved at some point - hopefully before the game is released though!
