~Kids don't do illegal downloads. It p*sses Agents G and Washington off... and they like guns~
I think quite a few of us found it surprising that genuinely good 'mature' Wii titles, like House of the Dead: Overkill didn't sell very well during 2009. But it might not be that the game(s) were unpopular. Instead it could be that they were popular, just not with people that actually like to pay for their goods.
According to the website TorrentFreak, HotD: Overkill was one of the most torrented (read: illegally downloaded) Wii titles of 2009, with over 890,000 downloads; which could have seriously impacted on overall sales figures and profits for SEGA.
However, some of the most illegally downloaded games of 2009 like; New Super Mario Bros. Wii (1,150,000), Modern Warfare 2 [PC] (4,100,000) and Street Fighter IV [Xbox 360] (840,000) still saw fantastic legitimate sales figures and net profit for the companies involved. Which still makes it look like HotD: Overkill wasn't a hugely popular title, even amongst people who don't pay for games.
According to VGChartz (if you can/ want to trust them), HotD: Overkill has sold approximately 480,000 copies worldwide, which isn't amazing really. But, just imagine if SEGA saw those extra 890,000 downloads as legitimate sales - Overkill would have most likely been seen as a commercial success by all; with well over 1 million sales.
Ok it wouldn't have been Modern Warfare 2's global domination status, but it would have meant that a good, genuinely fun Wii title recieved sales closer to what it deserved.
